Over the past ten years or so, we’ve seen a resurgence of the carriage‑style garage doors that were popular during the forties and fifties. In the early eighties, the use of wood garage doors began to drop off, mainly due to the fact that they required a great deal of maintenance. Homeowners wanted a garage door that didn’t need to be repainted every two years.
It should be pointed out that, at the time, steel garage door manufacturers weren’t very innovative in terms of design. They offered little more than a rectangular motif embossed on a sheet of metal. Baby boomers reacted by demanding steel doors with the look of wood doors, but without all the inconveniences. They wanted something with an authentic, traditional look… and most of all, different from what their neighbors had!
The style of the home
Country‑style garage doors blend very well with homes that include traditional architectural elements such as dormers, cornices, balustrades, lattice windows and cantilevered balconies. Everyone dreams of having a country house, but being close to the life of the city at the same time. So why not have a country-style home in a suburban setting?
Door models and decorative hardware
You can find a wide variety of steel doors with a country look. Those that are embossed with a rustic design (shortened or elongated) like the Eastman Estate and those that are decorated with PVC molding recall the swinging doors of the fifties like the Cambridge. But what really adds style to these doors is the architectural hardware: decorative handles and hinges resembling wrought iron.
Decorative windows
The addition of decorative windows, generally in the upper panel, adds even more charm to these garage door models. The windows can be fitted with decorative inserts, lending them an elegant style that is both traditional and unique. And the glass can be clear or even tinted in order to provide a certain amount of privacy.
Color choices
It’s important to harmonize the color of your garage door with the architectural style of your home, whether colonial, Georgian or Victorian. Of course, you can add decorative accessories to pull everything together even more. It should also be noted that door manufacturers have expanded their color palette to include all sorts of earth tones, with various shades of brown, clay and charcoal. They even offer a number of wood tones, such as American walnut.
