Is your garage in need of a serious decluttering session? Not sure where to start? Discover how you can build your dream garage in just 5 easy steps!
Throughout the country, one of the most neglected and underutilized space in our home is the garage. It often becomes the spot where we dump anything and everything. Over time, our garage becomes cluttered and loses function. Many of us can’t even park our cars in our garages since there’s simply no room!
Our garages can hold more than just our stuff. They can become a spot to complete DIY projects or to work on our cars. They can become great craft rooms or play areas. Our garages should be able to carry out multiple functions if that’s what we need.
Homeowners unite! It is time to reclaim our garages! Today, let’s look at 5 easy steps to create a dream garage.
1 – Sort and declutter
When it comes to reorganizing the garage, the biggest problem is often our sheer amount of stuff. Sorting and decluttering is the first step to reclaiming your space. Once every item in your garage has its own spot, your garage could be used efficiently, with all of your items now visible, reachable and tidy.
Make sure it’s nice outside before starting to declutter; you don’t want your stuff to get soaked. Start emptying your garage, sorting items as you go. Make the following piles:
- Garbage and recycling
- Sell or donate
- Things that don’t belong in your garage
- Objects that must go back into your garage
Be ruthless. If you have not used an item in the last year, get rid of it.
2 – Plan your dream space
Congratulations! The hardest part is done. Now that you have an empty room, you can plan your space. What will your dream garage look like? How will you use the space? Does it need to do double, even triple duty?
Once you have decided on the function, you will need a floor plan. Draw the room on paper, or enter your measurements in designing software. Include details like doors and windows to get an accurate blueprint.
Now try adding items you need, like appliances, counter tops and storage units. Make sure you have a spot for everything that needs to stay in your garage. Don’t forget to plan for bulky items like bicycles and lawnmowers. Try moving things around until you are pleased with your final design. If you need a little inspiration to get you started, try searching online for pictures.
Make sure to take advantage of otherwise wasted space. Add simple shelves above and beside your garage door. You may be shocked at how much storage can be created in these locations.
3 – Insulate and Finish the Garage
Now that you have a plan, you need to finish your garage. If not already done, insulate and drywall the room. Give each wall a good coat of paint. You can even paint your floor! Just make sure to use paint meant for concrete and check the manufacturer’s recommendations in regards to priming.
Expect construction costs to be about $1300, plus the cost of labor if you require the help of a contractor or painter.
4 – Choose a Garage Door and Electric Opener
A beautiful garage door is a great addition to your home. To create your dream garage, select a door with a high R‑value. It will be better insulated, which keeps utility costs low. Complete your garage door system with an electric door opener. Most are equipped with great accessories like wireless controls to let you operate your garage door easily!
5 – Accessorize
Since your garage is now fully insulated and painted, it is now ready to be accessorized. Price out the storage units and other fixtures that make up your design. Remember to shop around to get the biggest bang for your buck.
You can also build your own wood shelves. They easily hold plastic totes and keep all of your seasonal items well organized. If your design is quite elaborate, consider completing it in stages. It may be easier to fit all of your wants in your budget that way.
